KB45462: What is the impact of changing the 'Join Behavior' for a dataset in a Report Services Document or Dashboard containing multiple datasets in MicroStrategy Analytics Enterprise 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This article describes the functionality of the 'join behavior' setting for datasets within a Report Services Document or Dashboard in MicroStrategy.

Strategy has the feature to add attributes and metrics from any dataset in the document to a single grid or graph. To support this capability, the Analytical Engine behavior with respect to join data from multiple datasets has an option to control the join behavior between datasets known as 'Join Behavior'.

In Strategy Analytics Enterprise 10.x, in a grid formed by template units of multiple datasets, all the elements from the primary dataset will be displayed, and elements from the secondary dataset are displayed only if they also appear in the first dataset.
In the following example, no dataset is selected as a Primary dataset, both datasets are set as secondary, so only the common 'Category' attribute element is retained on the grid as shown below:

In the example below, the dataset C03 is primary and C04 is secondary so all the elements of C03 are maintained in the grid and the common element of C04 is displayed as well.
