"MMobile::MobileSenderImpl::hSendToAPNS - couldn't connect a socket. Error Code 0x800647C2" error message appears when attempting to send push notifications in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

SYMPTOM:

In a scenario where push notifications aren't being delivered, the DSSErrors.log may contain the following error messages:

MSIDeliveryEngine::hDelivery(): Unknown Delivery Failed. Error string from ExecuteMultiProcess Error: MMobile::MobileSenderImpl::hSendToAPNS - couldn't connect a socket. Error Code 0x800647C2.
MMobile::MobileSenderImpl::hSendToAPNS - couldn't resolve a host.  Error Code 0x800647C2.

CAUSE:

This is an indication that the Strategy Intelligence Server is unable to connect to Apple's gateway servers, used for push notifications. This can happen if the machine is behind a firewall or a proxy.

ACTION:

Users should verify that the Intelligence Server is able to connect to external servers on the internet:

  • To send notifications, inbound and outbound TCP packets over port 2195 need to be permitted.
  • To reach the feedback service, inbound and outbound TCP packets over port 2196 need to be permitted.
  • Devices and computers connecting to the push service over Wi-Fi will need to allow inbound and outbound TCP packets over port 5223.

The Apple push service uses a load balancing scheme that yields a different IP address for the same hostname. However, the entire 17.0.0.0/8 address block is assigned to Apple - this range can be specified in firewall rules.
