When running a Visual Insight report in MicroStrategy Web 9.3.x, an Exclamation mark is displayed, rather than the Visual Insight Report, this article describes how this problem can be handled.

SYMPTOM:
When running a Visual Insight report in Strategy Web 9.4.1, an exclamation mark is displayed, rather than the Visual Insight Report as seen below.

CAUSE:
This error is a generic memory error that was added by Adobe in Flash Player version 10.1 and will appear within a browser when the Flash Player is running in a very low memory environment. Because Visual Insight uses flash to render, and the flash dashboard builder executes on the client machine, the low memory environment is the client machine of each different user. When the VI dashboard requires more memory than the one available to the browser, the Flash player will break the cycle presenting the exclamation mark to prevent the browser from crashing.
This can be caused by using a 32-bit browser instead of a 64-bit, or by attempting to run a dashboard too big for the client machine to handle.

ACTION:
Follow some of these suggestions to try to overcome this issue:

  • Run the Visual Insight dashboard using a 64-bit browser instead of a 32-bit browser.
To determine the version of the browser, check the Windows Task Manager. On a x64 bit OS, the 32 bit browser will be marked with an *32, like shown below:

  • Notice how the x64 bit version of Internet Explorer is able to use more memory than the 32 bit version.
  • Allocate more memory to Internet Explorer by increasing the Disk Space parameter.
    • In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > General.
    • In either the 'Temporary Internet Files' or the 'Browsing History' section, choose Settings.
    • Modify the parameter shown below:

  • Increase the virtual memory of the machine. For more information on this, refer to the following Microsoft articles:
    • What is virtual memory?

    • Change the size of virtual memory
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-virtual-memory-size#1TC=windows-7
  • Add filters or prompts to the underlying data that feeds the visual insight dashboard to reduce the size of the object itself.
