KB45619: A view filter on a dataset is not applied to the same object dragged as Dynamic Text in an RS Document in MicroStrategy Web 9.3.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

A view filter on a dataset is not applied to the same object dragged as Dynamic Text in an RS Document in MicroStrategy Web 9.3.x

SYMPTOM:
A view filter placed on a dataset is not applied when an attribute or metric is extrapolated as dynamic text in a Report Services Document in Strategy Web 9.3.x.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow these steps to reproduce in a Strategy Tutorial Project.

  • Create a metric with the following definition:
    Max(Customer@ID) {Customer}
  • Create a report with the Customer attribute and the metric from Step 1.
  • Create a Derived metric off of the metric from Step 1 with the following definition:
    Case(( = 7796), ZeroToNull(0), Revenue)
Note: Customer ID 7796 is for Alen Aaby.
  • Run this report and notice that there is a null value under Revenue for Allen Aaby, Customer ID 7796, as expected.
  • Create a view filter on this dataset with the definition: Revenue is not null, like shown below.

  • In Strategy Web 9.3.x, create a document based on this report.
  • Drag Customer into the Detail Section as dynamic text.
  • Notice that Alen Aaby is displayed despite the view filter placed on the dataset, like shown below.

CAUSE:
This is working as design in Strategy Web 9.3.x. View filters only apply at the report level of the grid it was configured for. A view filter will not apply to a metric or attribute once it has been extrapolated as Dynamic Text in a Report Services Document.

ACTION:
Use a threshold or a report filter in lieu of a view filter, as both will work in an RS Document.
