KB45694: Doubled value and duplicated SQL passes appear in a report with Custom Group in MicroStrategy 9.x-10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Follow the steps below to reproduce the issue in Tutorial project:

  • Create a Custom Group with only one element "Year In list (2010)" in Strategy Developer.
  • Select the element, and go to Menu -> Custom Group -> Show Display Options, as shown below:

  • Select the last option "Show the element names, individual items within this element and also, expand these individual items if possible", as shown below:

  • Save and close the Custom Group.
  • Create a report with attribute Year, the customer group in rows, and a metric Cost in column, as shown below:

  • Remove custom group from grid, and the metric value is doubled, as shown below:
ka02R000000kcERQAY_0EM440000002CWU.png
  • NOTE: The expected result should be the same with when custom group is not in the report definition, as shown below:
ka02R000000kcERQAY_0EM440000002CWc.png
  • When the metric is doubled, there are also duplicated SQL passes in report SQL view, as shown below:
ka02R000000kcERQAY_0EM440000002CWi.png

CAUSE:

This is working as designed. In the report SQL, one pass is to calculate metric value of the custom group element, and another is to calculate metric value of the individual item (attribute). So when custom group is defined on the same attribute in the report, there will be two same passes generated.

ACTION:

Select the custom group element, and go to Menu -> Custom Group -> Show Display Options. Select either the first ("Show only the element names on the report") or the second option ("Show only the individual items within this element"), as shown below:

ka02R000000kcERQAY_0EM440000002CWm.png

Save and close the custom group.
Run the report again with custom group in grid. There is only one element displayed, as shown below:

ka02R000000kcERQAY_0EM440000002CWs.png

Remove the custom group from grid, and the result is as expected, as shown below:
