KB45844: No elements are returned in a cube-based report when using an element prompt in the view filter that has values restricted by a filter in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

This article discusses why a filter returns no elements in a cube. This is occurring because those elements were not added as part of the cube in the original publication.

Description

If a user references an element prompt (with values restricted by a filter) in the view filter of a cube-based report, they may experience a scenario where there are no elements returned in the prompt in Strategy 9.x and 10.x.

Steps to reproduce

Using Strategy Tutorial, the situation can be reproduced by doing the following:

  1. Create an Intelligent Cube with Year and Month in the rows and Revenue in the columns.  Publish the cube.
  2. Create a filter that qualifies on Quarter and set Quarter = Q2 2011 (or any quarter available).
  3. Create an element prompt that selects elements of Month and the values are restricted by the filter created in step 2.
  4. Create a report off the Intelligent Cube in step 1 with Year and Month in the rows and Revenue in the columns. In the view filter, create a new qualification, select Field and select "Select a Prompt...", and select the prompt created in step 3. Make sure the type in the bottom is element prompt.
  5. Run the report, and the prompt should return null values.

Why is this happening?

If the Intelligent Cube doesn't select values of Quarter when publishing the cube, it won't be able to filter by Quarter since there's no data, leading to no attribute elements returned in the prompt. Equivalently, if one or more of the attributes referenced in the filter referencing the prompt aren't selected as part of the original Cube, the prompt won't be able to filter by anything because those attributes weren't selected in the SQL.

Solution

This issue has been fixed in Strategy 2020 Update 1 on Web, iOS, and Android. Please upgrade to take advantage of this fix.

Workaround

To avoid this issue, add all the attributes to the Cube that are referenced in that filter.
