KB45954: "String in context 'Object Description' of XXX object 'YYY' with id 'ZZZ' cannot exceed the maximum length of 250 characters." returned when creating a report off an MDX cube in MicroStrategy 9.4.x - 10.x

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note explains that all MicroStrategy objects have a maximum character limit for object descriptions of 250 characters with spaces. Using objects with longer descriptions will return an error.

SYMPTOM:

When a user attempts to create report off an MDX cube, they may encounter an error referring to a specific object inside the cube. The cube is shown successfully in the drop down, but it errors out when trying to advance to the next screen.

String in context 'Object Description' of XXX object 'YYY' with id 'ZZZ' cannot exceed the maximum length of 250 characters.

This error can be thrown for objects of any object type inside a cube, regardless of cube provider.

CAUSE:

All Strategy objects have a maximum character limit for object descriptions of 250 characters with spaces. This error is thrown because the object in question inside the cube has a object description of more than 250 characters with spaces that is trying to be passed into the MDX Cube Catalog, which is not allowed.

ACTION:

The only way to resolve this error is to modify the object description of whatever object (or objects) is displayed in the error to be less than 250 characters with spaces. Speak to the administrator of the MDX cube about modifying its description.
