KB45971: "Could not allocate space for object '<object>' in database 'tempdb' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full." error message is returned when running an Intelligent Cube against a SQL Server warehouse in MicroStrategy

This article describes a situation where a "could not allocate space for object" error is received from SQL Server.

SYMPTOM:
When a user runs a large Intelligent Cube against a SQL Server warehouse, they can sometimes encounter an error after waiting for the query to finish.
"Could not allocate space for object '<object>' in database 'tempdb' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup."

CAUSE:
Each SQL Server database has a primary filegroup. Within that primary filegroup lies a primary data file (usually ending in .mdf). This error is thrown because the drive where the primary data file does not have enough space to handle the query it's being given.

ACTION:
Contact the Database Administrator about creating disk space on the drive containing the primary data file by performing one of the following:

  • Delete unneeded files.
  • Drop objects in the filegroup.
  • Add additional files to the file group.
  • Set autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup.
