KB45987: When trying to edit a Freeform SQL report or create a new FFSQL report, MicroStrategy Developer 9.x - 10.x hangs and will never show the FFSQL editor

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

This technical note outlines an issue that occurs when trying to edit a Freeform SQL report, where the editor hangs.

SYMPTOM:
Strategy Developer hangs when trying to edit an existing Freeform SQL report or creating a new Freeform SQL report. When creating a new report, the message below shows and Developer becomes non-responsive:

Loading Report Editor

When editing an existing Freeform SQL report the report definition can be edited. However, when trying to edit the "Freeform SQL Definition", Developer hangs with similar behavior as creating a new report.
This behavior is local to a client machine as it occurs in both 2-tier and 3-tier project sources. Also, this behavior is shown for all projects, regardless of the number of managed objects in that project.
After trying to use the Freeform SQL editor, Developer becomes unresponsive and can only be resolved by ending the process. In examining Task Manager, the MSTRDesk.exe process does not show any increase in memory usage over time.

ACTION:
This issue may be caused by an issue during installation of Strategy Developer. It may be resolved by performing a full uninstall and reinstall of Strategy Developer.
