KB46184: "The Intelligence Server name could not be resolved using the IP Address. Please fix this before trying to connect" error occurs when attempting to connect to Command Manager in MicroStrategy 9.x and newer

The following knowledge base article describes one possible cause for the error "The Intelligence Server name could not be resolved using the IP Address. Please fix this before trying to connect" when connecting to the Intelligence Server via Command Manager. A solutionis provided.

SYMPTOM:
 
While attempting to login to Command Manager using the "Connect to a Project Source" option, users receive the following error:

The Intelligence Server name could not be resolved using the IP Address.  Please fix this before trying to connect.

 
CAUSE:
This error occurs because Strategy Command Manager is unable to resolve the hostname of the Intelligence Server machine. The hostname and IP address of the machine where Intelligence Server is installed needs to be specified in the hosts file of the machine where Command Manager is installed.  Only then will Command Manager be able to resolve the hostname of the Intelligence Server machine.
 
 
ACTION:
Specify both the IP address and hostname of the machine where Intelligence Server is installed in the hosts file of the machine where Command Manager is installed.
 
Perform the following steps:

  • On the machine where Command Manager is installed browse to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and hope the 'hosts' file.
  • Specify the IP Address of the Intelligence Server machine followed by the hostname of the Intelligence Server machine.  Such as in the example below:

This will allow Command Manager to successfully connect to Intelligence Server.
