KB46211: How to host files for the Media Widget in a MicroStrategy Cloud Enterprise environment.

Community Admin

• Strategy

Customers in the Cloud Enterprise might require to host media files on their web servers to use them on the MicroStrategy Media widget.

SUMMARY:
Customers in the Cloud Enterprise might require to host media files on their web servers to use them on the Strategy Media widget.

  • The media widget in Strategy is used to show videos in a Strategy web dashboard
  • Customer environments on cloud by default have a shared folder on the Utility box and in it a prod_images and dev_images folders.
  • These folders are mapped to the Strategy web application servers to host the images to be displayed.
  • It is possible to take advantage of this mapping to host media files for the widget on the web server.

REQUIREMENTS:
Keep in mind that for the widget to work the files uploaded must satisfy the following requirements:

• Video - Only video in an .swf or .flv format can be played in the Media widget.
• Audio -  Only audio in an .mp3 format can be played in the Media widget.
• Images - Only images in a .png, .jpg, .gif, or .svg format
EXAMPLE:
This is an example of uploading a video to a customer's development environment in Strategy Cloud.
1. Login to the Strategy Cloud Utility Server.
2. Copying video file test.flv to the dev_images folder on the machine, the location should resemble  \\10.24.11.10\na01onap02cXXX\dev_images
3. Login to the development environment with Strategy Web.
4. Edit the Dashboard to alter the media widget properties.
5. Specify the location of the content in the Default Feed field. A file placed directly on that folder should be accessible in a URL similar to the following example:
https://customer.cloud.microstrategy:1443/MicroStrategy/images/test.flv
6. Running the dashboard will now display the video.

Note: Other files might be able to be hosted for web access in the same fashion. If you have questions contact Strategy Technical Support.
