KB46261: What are the File Generation governing parameters in MicroStrategy

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

MicroStrategy allows users to set governing limits on jobs and user sessions at the Intelligence Server and project levels. This technical note explains the File Generation limits which are only available at the Intelligence Server level.

Strategy allows users to set governing limits on jobs and user sessions at the Intelligence Server and project levels. This technical note explains the File Generation limits which are only available at the Intelligence Server level. Governing rules at the Intelligence Server level are located in Strategy Developer under Strategy Intelligence Server Configuration > Governing Rules > Default > File Generation as shown below.

Note that changing the following governing limits will require an Intelligence Server restart to take effect.

  • Maximum number of XML cells: Limits the size of reports executed from Strategy Web. When this limit is met, incremental fetch is used. If a report is part of an HTML document, then when this HTML document is executed from either Web or Desktop, the data that exceeds this limit will be truncated. The maximum value is 99999999 and is by default set to 500000.
  • Maximum number of XML drill paths: Limits the number of attributes to which users can drill in Strategy Web.  Setting this limit too low may not display all the available drill attributes to users. Setting this limit too high will consume memory and may affect performance. The maximum value is 3000, and is by default set to 100.

  • Maximum memory consumption for XML (MB): Limits the memory consumption for XML files in Megabytes. The maximum value is 2047 MB, and is by default set to 95 MB. A document that violates this governing limit in Strategy Web will produce the following error:

  •

The following error is also seen in the DSSErrors.log:

Strategy Intelligence Server cannot handle your request because a memory request has exceeded the configured limit. Please contact the server administrator.

  • Maximum memory consumption for PDF files (MB): Limits the memory consumption for PDF files in Megabytes. The maximum value is 2047 MB, and is by default set to 95 MB. A document that violates this governing limit in Strategy Web, when exported to PDF will not display data, rather will appear as a grey box. The following error will appear in the DSSErrors.log:

CDSSPdfExporter: The Raw Data buffer exceeded the memory governing limit. The current allocation size is <bytes>, and the limit is <bytes>.

  • Maximum memory consumption for Excel files (MB): Limits the memory consumption for Excel files generated from Strategy Web in Megabtes. The maximum value is 2047 MB, and is by default set to 95 MB. Reports exported to Excel from Strategy Web that exceed this limit will still be exported. The data will be truncated, and the following message will appear in the Excel file.

Unable to complete the export request due to the memory governing limit for Excel exporting.

The following message will appear in the DSSErrors.log:

CDSSExcelExporter: Current memory usage exceeded the memory governing limit. The current allocation size: InternalBuffer = <bytes>, MemBuffer = <bytes>, ObjectBuffer = <bytes>, StyleMem = <bytes>, GraphStyleMem = <bytes> and RenderingBuffer = <bytes>. The limit: <bytes>.

  • Maximum memory consumption for HTML files (MB):Limits the memory consumption for HTML files generated from Strategy Web in Megabtes. The maximum value is 2047 MB, and is by default set to 95 MB. Strategy Web will not allow users to export to HTML if the report violates this governing limit. The "export" button will be greyed out and users will be shown the following message:

You cannot export this report because it has exceeded the limits that the Administrator has set for the maximum number of cells to export.
