How to Limit the Number of Gauge Labels or Markers in a Gauge Graph or Widget in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 and above.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.4.1, on occasions the number of markers\data labels being displayed around the outside edge of a gauge graph will overlap and crowd each other, like shown below:

It may be desirable to adjust the following to get a less cluttered graph, like shown below:

ACTION

Note: For these changes to take effect on a gauge widget, first make the modifications to the Gauge graph and then switch back to the Gauge widget.

  • Insert a Graph > Gauge.
  • Add desired attributes and metrics.
  • View in Editable mode.
  • Right click the Graph > Format Graph.
  • Go to the Axes tab.
  • Enable the Max Value, Min value (0), and Grid Interval.
  • Take the Max Value and divide it by the number of markers needed. Input this calculated value in the Grid Interval field.

  •

In the example above, to display only 6 labels, divide the Maximum value 30,000 by 6 = 5,000. This is the number on the grid interval.

  • Click apply to see the changes.
  • If the gauge is a widget it can be changed back to a widget now.
  • Ensure that the widget is configured to inherit the graph formatting.
