KB46425: Attribute element selectors will display elements even if there is no data for those elements, in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1,

Community Admin

• Strategy

In MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1, attribute elements of a selector are displayed even if they return no data.

SYMPTOM:

In Strategy Web 9.3.1, if an attribute element of a selector did not have any data associated with it, it would be removed from the list displayed to the user. However, in Strategy Web 9.4.1, the user may encounter a scenario where elements are displayed even if they return no data, as seen below:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Follow these steps to reproduce this issue in Strategy Tutorial.

  • Create a report with the attributes Month, Brand, and Manager in the page-by axis, the metric Profit on the grid, and a report filter for the Year 2012.
  • Run this report in Strategy Developer 9.4.1 and select Month: "Jan 2012" and Brand: "Al Hirschfield".
Note that there are 13 managers remaining for these selections, as seen below:

  • Change the Brand to "Dave Barry"; 15 managers are now listed, as shown below:

  • In Strategy Web 9.4.1, create a document using this grid, but use selectors for Month, Brand, and Manager instead of group-by's.
  • Configure each selector to target the other two selectors as well as the grid, as shown here:

  • Run the document and select Month: Jan 2012 and Brand: Al Hirschfield, like in step 2.
  • Notice that all 15 managers are displayed in the Manager selector even though there is no data for "Kelly, Timothy" and "Rose, Peter".

CAUSE:

This is a known issue in Strategy Web 9.4.1.

ACTION:

This issue has been addressed in Strategy 9.4.1 HF5. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.

WORKAROUND:

In the selectors' Properties and Formatting > Selector page, uncheck "Apply selections as filter" for each selector. The selectors will filter appropriately now.
