KB46660: New Feature: Graph Matrix partial rendering in Single Chart in MicroStrategy Mobile 9.4.1 iOS Update 2.

This document discusses a new feature in MicroStrategy Mobile 9.4.1 iOS Update 2.

Overview:

Scrollbars (vertical / horizontal) will be displayed whenever there are too many mini-charts and they all cannot fit in one window. To increase performance, a windowing / viewport algorithm has been implemented both for the vertical and horizontal scrollbar by which only the current window, plus a few more windows are rendered. This enables the visualization to display very quickly, since only a portion of the matrix is rendered, while allowing the visualization to scroll smoothly, since a few extra windows are rendered, in addition to the current window displayed.

In Strategy Mobile 9.4.1 iOS Update 2, the Graph Matrix has been further enhanced to support partial rendering even on a single chart. If a single chart is big enough, partial rendering will be triggered.

Behavior:

Graph Matrix is a performance enhancement feature. It just happens automatically if the chart length is quite long, or the bubbles on the screen is very intensive.

1.     For Lines, Bars, Areas i.e charts with a metric in one axis and an attribute in the other or for grids charts, i.e charts with attributes on both the X and Y axis, a scrollbar could be displayed for the chart because there are too many elements on the attribute axis or the chart is set to “fit to content”. With this new feature, only the current window and a few additional windows should be rendered. This would ensure that the chart handles numerous datapoints while scrolling smoothly as well.

2.     For Scatter/Bubble charts i.e charts with metrics on both the X and Y axis, bubbles typically overlay other bubbles and are hidden by the other bubbles. Following rendering happens with this new feature.
a.     Partition the canvas into grids in a way similar to the grids constructed to avoid text overlap for data labels. The default grid size is 5 X 5 pixels.
b.     If each grid occupied by the circle is also occupied by three other bubbles that are larger  (bigger radius) than it, the circle will be dropped.  Using the image below, the circle could be dropped if three large bubbles occupy cells "A" through "I", or if three large bubbles occupy cells "A", three large bubbles   occupy cell "B", and so on and so forth.
