KB47071: "Invalid operation in authentication due to one of the following: ..." error message occurs when attempting login using SiteMinder trusted authentication

Users are unable to login to MicroStrategy Web and yield the following error message: "The Web Server encountered an unknown runtime error. (Invalid operation in authentication due to one of the following: connection to the database server is lost; no available memory; the configuration is in an inconsistent state.)"

SYMPTOM:

When users attempt to log into Strategy Web they encounter the following error message:

Sample Code/Error:
The Web Server encountered an unknown runtime error.
(Invalid operation in authentication due to one of the following: connection to the database server is lost; no available memory; the configuration is in an inconsistent state.)

CAUSE:

By default Strategy Web expects Siteminder to send the user login in HTTP header "SM_USER". If the HTTP header name differs from "SM_USER" above error message is returned.

Most common causes for header in discrepancy are:

  1. Customized header names in SiteMinder configuration for Strategy Web Web Agent URL.
  2. Siteminder setting "LegacyVariables" which removes the underscore from HTTP header names to support legacy applications.

ACTION:

Review SiteMinder configuration and verify if HTTP header naming corresponds to naming described in KB47070: What are the default user login HTTP header names for supported trusted authentication providers using MicroStrategy Web 9.x. In addition, ensure that setting "LegacyVariables" is disabled. Refer to CA Siteminder documentation for further information.
