In Strategy Analytics Enterprise, dataset relationships are not considered when generating the element list for slicing selectors when there’s no schema relationship among the selector attributes.
Tutorial sample:
1. Datasets R01 and R02 have the same set of attributes {Year, Region, Category} in them but different data.
Dataset R03 has attribute {Category} and different elements from R01 and R02 as shown below:

2. Create a report services document RWD01 as given below:
When the Year selector is chosen as ‘All’, all 4 categories would be returned on Category selector.

In Strategy Analytics Enterprise, the selections for slicing selector come from the targets. In above case when the selector attributes are off the target grids, at runtime they would be pushed down to the target grids as if they’re on them. The final element list is a Union of the lists available from all targets.
At runtime, {Year} and {Category} would be pushed down to grid1 and grid2. {Category} would be pushed down to grid3.
When 'All' is chosen for the Year selector, there is {2005} from R01 and {2006} from R02 and no Year attribute elements from R03, so the final set of Year elements is: {2005, 2006}.
For Category selector, there is {Books, Music} from R01 and {Movies, Music} from R02 and {Electronics, Movies} from R03, so the final set of elements is: {Books, Music, Electornics, Movies} i.e., all 4 categories.
Choose {2005} on Year. Category selector would still have all 4 categories and grid from R02 has no data returned. Grid from R03 displays metrics for both the the categories. When Year is chosen on {2005}, there is {Books, Music} from R01 and no data from R02 and {Electronics, Movies} from R03. The Category elements displayed are a union of elements in both the targets - so all 4 categories are displayed for the Category selector.

Choose {2006} on Year. Category selector would have {Electronics, Movies, Music} selections and only the grids from R02 and R03 have data. When Year chosen is {2006}, there is no data in the grid coming from R01 and {Movies, Music} from R02 and {Electronics, Movies} from R03. The Category elements displayed are a union of elements in both the targets so the set is {Movies, Music, Electronics} for the Category selector.
