KB47430: Background images are moved to the right when exporting a document to Excel in MicroStrategy Web

Community Admin

• Strategy

Due to the fact that images are treated as objects in MicroStrategy Web documents, it is not possible to insert a background image that will be maintained in Microsoft Excel.

SYMPTOM
In Strategy Web, it is possible to overlay an object over an image to create a background image for a dashboard or document, as seen below:

However, when exported to Excel, the image is moved to the right of the grid object, as seen below:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Create a report in Strategy Tutorial with the attributes Country, Region and Distribution Center, and the metric Revenue.
  2. Create a new document and insert an image in it.  Resize the image to take up most of the template.
  3. Add the report created in step 1 as a dataset and drag it as a grid into the template on top of the image.
  4. Export the document to Excel and note that the image has moved to the right.

CAUSE
This issue is caused by Microsoft Excel not supporting overlapping objects. Due to the fact that images are treated as objects in Strategy Web documents, it is not possible to insert a background image that will be maintained in Microsoft Excel.
