How to determine which process a core file was generated from?

In order to determine which process a core file was generated from, connect to a Linux or UNIX machine and run the file command as specified below:

 file /path/to/core/file/core

For example:

rh64:/home>file /home/test/core.MSTRSvr.14375

And the output will be as follows:

/home/test/core.MSTRSvr.14375: ELF 64-bit LSB core file x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), SVR4-style, from '/opt/mstr/sw/IntelligenceServer/bin/MSTRSvr -w /opt/mstr/home/IntelligenceServe'

The bolded portion above indicates which application/process generated this core file. And in this instance, 'MSTRSvr' indicates that it is an Intelligence Server core file.
