KB47680: Visualizations display as blank after applying a metric filter on a Visual Insight dashboard in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 and above

Visualizations display as blank after applying a metric filter on a Visual Insight dashboard in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 and above

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web, applying a metric filter on a Visual Insight dashboard will filter all visualizations that can be linked through at least one attribute. However, if the metric placed in the filter section does not exist in all the datasets linked by an attribute, the filter will result in a blank visualization for those visualizations that didn't contain the metric, like shown below.

Note: Refer to article KB44944: Multiple datasets in a single grid/graph/widget object in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 and above for information on the data blending feature for Strategy Web 9.4.0.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
In Strategy Tutorial:

  1. Create a Report with Category, Subcategory, and Profit.
  2. Create a second Report with Category, Item, and Revenue.
  3. Create a Dashboard using both Reports as datasets.
  4. Add a Grid visualization from Report 1.
  5. Add a Grid visualizations from Report 2.
  6. Insert a filter on Profit.
  7. Toggle the filter values.
  8. Notice that Report 2 gets blanked out, because it has no data related to Profit.

CAUSE:
This is working as designed in Strategy Web. The filter will affect all visualizations contained in the Visual Insight dashboard that are linked through an attribute.

WORKAROUND:
Disable Cube Join behavior in Strategy Developer.

  1. In Strategy Developer, right-click the Project and select Project Configuration.
  2. Under Project Definition > Advanced > Analytical engine VLDB property, select "Configure".
  3. Expand Analytical Engine > Document grids from Multiple Datasets.
  4. Uncheck "Use default inherited value - (Default Settings)".
  5. Check the option "Objects in document grids must come from the grid's source dataset only".
  6. Save and close.
  7. Restart the Strategy I-Server and the web server.

Note: Disabling the cube join feature will apply for the entire project.
