KB47718: MicroStrategy cannot send emails from Enterprise Cloud

Community Admin

• Strategy

This KB discusses the restriction of sending emails from Enterprise Cloud Intelligence Server.

SYMPTOM:
When subscribing a report or document to be sent through email from a Strategy implementation in Enterprise Cloud, emails are not received.
CAUSE:
Strategy Enterprise Cloud complies with security certifications that prevent the Intelligence Servers to access the Internet directly. This will block the emails from being sent.
Strategy's Intelligence Server out of the cloud environment sends email through the internet by using DNS routes, in Enterprise Cloud, the internet access is restricted to prevent security breaches, and at the same time blocks the outbound email.

Normal Email Distribution for Implementations outside of the Cloud

ACTION:
Strategy's Intelligence Server can send email directly to a SMTP Smart Host server by specifying the IP address and the port of this server, however the SMTP server receiving the email has to comply with the following requirements:

  • SMTP server must be inside the VPN encryption domain between the company and Strategy's server
  • SMTP server must NOT have SMTP Authentication. At this moment Strategy does not support SMTP Authentication and won't be able to establish a connection to the server

Email Distribution from Environments in the cloud. Customer's SMTP Server must be added to the VPN Tunnel

SPECIAL CASES:
In some special cases certain infrastructure configurations will prevent the customers from being able to bring the SMTP servers into the VPN tunnel to Strategy. To workaround those limitations the customer will need to provide an Email Relay server that can be brought into the VPN to take advantage of the Distribution Services features.
Currently SMTP Authentication is not supported in Strategy 9.x. Support for SMTP Authentication starts in Strategy 10.x.

WARNING MESSAGES:
Strategy cannot provide an SMTP mail server or email Relay services at this point.
