KB47759: In MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x, poor performance is seen when fetching data from Hive

In MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x, poor performance is seen when fetching data from Hive

SYMPTOM
In Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x, when running a report against Hive on CDH 4.x, even though the execution on the Hive server finishes, the report execution on Strategy completes after a long time.

Enabling the ODBC traces shows that the long execution time on the Strategy side is because of the slow rate of data fetch from the Hive server. This can also be verified from the post-execution SQL view of the report which breaks down the report execution duration.

CAUSE
This is a known issue in Strategy 9.x. when fetching STRING data types from Hive.

ACTION
This issue has been fixed in Strategy Intelligence Server 9.4.1 Hotfix 3. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of the fix.

WORKAROUND
This issue will not be seen when working with VARCHAR data types. Modify the data type of the STRING columns to VARCHAR. However, certain versions of Hive such as Hive 0.10 don't support VARCHAR; in such cases, code fix is necessary.
