KB47782: Variance Transformation Metric is showing incorrect results in MicroStrategy 9.4.1

Community Admin

• Strategy

This KB discusses an issue where incorrect results are returned from a Variance Transformation Metric in MicroStrategy 9.4.1.

SYMPTOM:
Incorrect results are returned from a Variance Transformation Metric.

CAUSE:
The evaluation order in which the analytical engine processes the transformation metrics when displaying the variance of a smart metric, can cause incorrect results to be shown.

Example:

  1. The project has a base metric whose expression is M1/M2
  2. The transformation for last year metric would be: [Last Year (M1)] / [Last Year (M2)]
  3. The Variance transformed metric for Last Year would be automatically generated as: (M1 - [Last Year (M1)] / (M2 - [Last Year (M2)])
  4. While the expected Variance transformed metric should be: ([M1] / [M2]) - ([Last Year (M1)] / [Last Year (M2)])

ACTION:
This issue has been fixed starting in 9.4.1 HF3. Update to this HotFix to take advantage of this fix.
A new VLDB setting, "Smart Metric Transformation",  has been introduced in HotFix 3 to fix the evaluation order of the transformation metrics, modify this setting to change the evaluation order for this type of metrics.
To be able to use this VLDB setting a MD Update is required through MDUpdate Util.
This property can be modified at the metric level or at the project level.
