KB47787: "MExec::ServiceImpl_SYSV::Stop:`/etc/init.d/xxxx@20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx-iserver-CastorServer` failed" error message is seen when trying to stop or restart the Intelligence Server on UNIX/Linux via Service Manager

The following knowledge base article explains one possible cause of the error "Unexpected error occurred. MExec::ServiceImpl_SYSV::Stop::`/etc/init.d/xxxx@20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx-iserver-CastorServer` failed". A solution is provided.

SYMPTOM:

When trying to stop or restart the Intelligence Server on UNIX/Linux via Service Manager, the following error occurs.

ka04W00000148zSQAQ_0EM4400000029Mj.png

Failed to start service
Unexpected error occurred. MExec::ServiceImpl_SYSV::Stop::`/etc/init.d/xxxx@20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx-iserver-CastorServer` failed:
/etc/init.d/xxxx@20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx-iserver-CastorServer: PID file 'var/run/20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx-iserver-CastorServer.pid' is empty, service is not running.

Additionally, it can be seen that while Service Manager shows the Intelligence Server to be running, it is not possible to connect to it through Desktop/Developer or Web.

CAUSE:

This issue occurs because the machine was shutdown without the Intelligence Server being stopped gracefully (for example, during a power outage). On restart, the status-iserver.xml file that contains the current Intelligence Server status still contains the old "Running" status, which shows up in Service Manager, and the Intelligence Server is not able to start.

For more information on the status-iserver.xml file, refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base Technical Note.

KB14362: MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x and 10.x status stored in the file system in the file ‘status-iserver.xml’

ACTION:

Close Service Manager and delete the status-iserver.xml file from the <MSTR_HOME>/IntelligenceServer/ directory.  Launch Service Manager, and the Intelligence Server will show as "Stopped" instead of "Running". Start the Intelligence Server, and it should generate a new status-iserver.xml file and work normally.
