This article outlines an issue where a Geo Attribute which elements return in all capital letters does not display in an ESRI map on MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1 HF2

SYMPTOM:
Starting in Strategy Web 9.4.1 Hotfix 2, users are able to display areas on an ESRI map visualization in Visual Insight. However, if the Geo Attribute contains capital letters such as ALABAMA, the areas will not display on a Report Services report, document, or Visual Insight dashboard, like shown below.

Note: Refer to technical note KB46610 for more information on the map with areas visualization in Strategy Web 9.4.1 HF2.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
In Strategy Tutorial:

  • Create an excel file with State names in capital letters, like shown below.

  • Use data import to import the excel file into Strategy Web.
  • Notice the State geographical role is automatically applied during the import process.
  • Create a Visual Insight dashboard.
  • Select the Map with Areas visualization.
  • Notice the areas do not display.

CAUSE:
This is a known limitation of ESRI map with areas in Strategy Web 9.4.1 HF2.

ACTION:
This issue has been fixed in Strategy Web 10. Take advantage of upgrading for a fix.

WORKAROUND:
Ensure the data in the warehouse tables or import files are in lower case except for the first letter, e.g. Alabama. Or, if capital letters are necessary, use the map visualization to display markers instead.
