KB48025: Taiwan data is not mapped and the country is included as a part of China in the "Countries of the World" layer for the Image Layout widget and in the ESRI area map in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1.

SYMPTOM:

When using the Image Layout widget or the ESRI Area Map visualization in Visual Insight, Taiwan is shown to be a part of the China map shape, as shown below:

ESRI Area Map:

Image Layout:

Additionally, any data for Taiwan is not included into the data for China.

CAUSE:

Due to the official stance of China that Taiwan is a rightful province of the Peoples Republic of China, and the official stance of Taiwan that China is a part of the Republic of China, many maps have included Taiwan as a part of the Chinese administrative territory to avoid conflict.  Strategy made use of an older map, before it was standard practice to have Taiwan as a separate entity on maps.

ACTION:

Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on this issue.

WORKAROUND:

It is possible to use custom shapes to create a shape for Taiwan for both the ESRI area map and the Image Layout visualization by using the following tech notes:

KB47442 - How to create Custom Shapes for ESRI Maps in Strategy Web 9.4.1 HF3
