KB482951: NullToEmpty function within a concat statement returns empty in Dossier

• Strategy

This article describes a known issue. In a dossier, NullToEmpty function within a concat statement always returns empty.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM:
In Strategy 2019 and above, NullToEmpty function does not work within a concat statement. In some cases, an attribute may contain empty values, so the user needs to convert NULL values to empty strings. Then use it within a concat function.  But statement looking like Concat(attribute01@ID, NullToEmpty(attribute02@ID)) always returns an empty value.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Create and publish cube containing Customer as the attribute and Revenue and Item as metrics in MSTR Tutorial.
  2. Create a new Dossier and connect it to the cube.
  3. Create a derived attribute that will always return an empty value. Name it EMPTY.
    ID Formula:    NullToEmpty(ZeroToNull(0))
  4. Create a second derived attribute.
    Concat(Customer@ID, “abc”,Item@ID)
The answer is like this: 12345abc54321
  5. Create a third derived attribute.
    Concat(Customer@ID, “abc”,Item@ID, EMPTY@ID)
  6. The answer should be something like this: 12345abc54321
But this attribute returns the value as empty

CAUSE:
This is a known issue.
WORKAROUND:
Replace the NullToEmpty(attrib02@ID) with IF(Length(attrib02@ID) = 0, "", attrib02@ID).
