KB483033: Troubleshooting Workstation on Windows: Connection and Authentication

Community Admin

• Strategy

Connection

Workstation uses the Strategy Library URL (API) to connect to an environment or Intelligence Server. Currently we support the following authentication modes:

  • Standard: Intelligence Server is the authentication authority. This is the default authentication mode. For more information, see Implementing Standard Authentication  in the System Administration Guide.

  • LDAP (lightweight directory access protocol): An LDAP server is the authentication authority. For more information, see Setting up LDAP Authentication in MicroStrategy Library

  • Guest: Users log in as guest and do not need to provide a password. This authentication mode may be required to enable other authentication modes, such as database warehouse. For more information, see Implementing Anonymous Authentication  in the System Administration Guide.

  • SAML authentication: a SAML compliant identity provider is the authentication authority. For more information, see Enabling Single Sign-On with SAML Authentication .

  • Integrated authentication: A domain controller using Kerberos authentication is the authentication authority. For more information, see Enabling Integrated Authentication .

  • Trusted authentication: A third-party single sign-on tool, such as IBM® Tivoli® Access Manager, CA SiteMinder®, or Oracle® Access Manager, is the authentication authority. For more information, see Enable Single Sign-On to Library with Trusted Authentication .

Most common Workstation connection issues come from either Strategy Library URL, the source environment, or the Intelligence Server.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If there’s an error in the environment URL, verify that the Strategy Library URL is valid. Copy and paste the same URL in a web browser and see if it connects or redirects to the Strategy Library page.
  • Verify the URL is using the correct web protocol. By default, the Strategy Library URL uses HTTP. However, some environments may be configured to use HTTPS. For example, the AQDT environment uses HTTPS protocol. The web browser can be used to confirm this as well.
  • Check if the Workstation machine has access to the internet.
  • Check if the source environment or the Intelligence Server is accessible or reachable.
  • Check if the issue is environment- or machine-specific. Can the user connect to a different environment? If yes, it’s likely environment-specific. Otherwise, it’s machine-specific.
  • If possible, verify if it is specific to Workstation Windows, Workstation Mac or common to both.

 Authentication

  • If the is an error during authentication, check that the user has sufficient privileges to connect to the environment. Check the Use Workstation/Desktop privilege
  • Test if the issue happens for the OOB administrator user.
  • Check if it works with a different connection mode.
  • Ask how the Strategy Library server is configured, for example is it using a proxy, load balancer, and so on. Does Workstation support the configuration?
  • Use Fiddler or Charles to debug and capture the error message to identify the root cause.
  • Check if the environment has a valid SSL certificate. All environment must have a valid SSL certificate to use Workstation.
