KB483495: The error "Connection failed because remote server is down" appears when connecting to a SAP HANA project in MicroStrategy Developer

This article provides potential troubleshooting steps if you get the error, "Connection failed because remote server is down" while connecting to a SAP HANA project via Developer.

Description

When using Strategy 2019, the error "Connection failed because remote server is down" appears when connecting to a SAP HANA project in Strategy Developer with the Intelligence Server on a remote RHEL 7.6 (Linux) server.

Why is this happening?

There can be several reasons that can block the connection between Developer and the Intelligence Server. To identify why this error is appearing, try the following troubleshooting techniques.

Troubleshooting

  • Check if the port (default 34952) used by the Intelligence Server is open and accepting connections.
  • Check if the project source server name is using the proper host name and the port number is correct. By default the port used in the project source is 34952. Your Intelligence Server might be using different port.
  • The Server name in project source might sometimes need the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) and not just the host name.
  • Try to restart the Intelligence Server by either using the command
    mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer stop
to stop the server and then
    mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer start
     to start the Intelligence Server.
  • Check the firewall setting and try to disable it temporarily to make sure firewall is not blocking the connection.
  • Try to ping the Intelligence Server machine to check the connections between them are working.
