KB483568: Rows not aggregated properly when duplicated rows exist in data

Qinyi Chen

Quality Engineer, Principal • Strategy

Before Microstrategy 2020, when a user imports a dataset that contains duplicate rows, aggregation function is not used and rows in the grid with the same attribute element may not be aggregated correctly.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Symptoms

  • Dataset contains duplicate tuples of attributes. It often happens when the user applies “Do Not Import” to one or more attributes in the dataset.
  • Rows with same attribute element are not aggregated into a single row

Glossary

  • Dynamic Aggregation Functions

Steps to Reproduce

1.    Create a new dossier, add new data, use Clipboard and input the sample data as below.

2.    Add Category, SubCategory, and Cost to the dossier.

3. Though the 3 rows have the same Category & SubCategory, the Cost is not aggregated.
4. If one of the attributes is removed from the template, the Cost is aggregated.

Cause

This is a known issue before Strategy 2020.
Previous Data Engine uses the logic of "Show Data" when all the columns from Dataset are on the template. In "Show Data", Engine displays all the rows with all columns and will not aggregate. This behavior has confused our customers.

Solution

To resolve this defect, please upgrade to Strategy 2020 or above, and set Data Engine Version setting to 12.
The project level setting Data Engine Version can only be enabled through Workstation. For more details on enabling the setting, see Change Data Engine Version .
With Data Engine Version set to 12, the rows with same attribute names can be automatically aggregated into a single row.
