KB483615: Sharing Links results in the error, "The task cannot be completed due to a malformed request. Please try again"

Community Admin

• Strategy

This article describes an issue visible in MicroStrategy Web when using the share functionality in Dossiers, reports or documents.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

When opening a dossier as a non-admin and sharing it via the menu Share > Get a link, the following error message appears:
“The task cannot be completed due to a malformed request. Please try again”.

https

https

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Log in to Strategy Web with a non-administrator user.
  2. Open an existing dossier, document, or report.
  3. In the menu, go to Share > Get a link. The error appears.
  4. Close the pop-up. Notice the link window remains open and you can retrieve a link for Library but not for Web or embedding.

Why is this happening?

The issue is related to the personal view event. A personal view event is a configuration object in Strategy that is used to share dossiers, reports, and documents in Strategy Web. When an object is shared, the personal view event is triggered.
The personal view event is linked to a schedule that has the same name:

A subscription to the shared dossier, report, or document is also added to the subscription list.

As such, the message may appear as a result of the following scenarios:

  • There is a limited number of personal view subscriptions in the project configuration's governing rules settings.
  • The personal view event or schedule configuration object is missing in Developer.
  • The setting "Use Strategy Scheduler" is disabled in the Intelligence Server.

Solution

Since this error can be a result of three scenarios, it's recommended to try the three following solutions:

  • Increase the number of personal view subscriptions
  • Retrieve the Personal View Event or Schedule Configuration Objects
  • Enable the setting "Use MicroStrategy Scheduler" in the Intelligence Server

How to Increase the Number of Personal View Subscriptions

  1. In Developer, right-click your project and select Project Configurations.
  2. Go to Governing Rules > Default > Subscriptions.
  3. Change the value of Personal Views to -1. This gives an unlimited number of personal views.

How to Retrieve the Personal View Event or Schedule Configuration Objects

The personal view schedule may have been deleted for maintenance reasons, or it may not have been migrated from another project during project duplication. In this scenario, users cannot share objects because the personal view schedule is missing.
To share objects, you must retrieve the missing personal view schedule and its corresponding personal view event from the out-of-the-box installation. For example, you can use the Tutorial Project metadata. After, use Object Manager to create a configuration package, generating an .mpp file.

After, use Object Manager to import the package file into the target environment where the configuration objects are missing.

If you cannot find the configuration objects, please contact Technical Support so an engineer can help you finding a solution.

How to Enable the Setting "Use Strategy Scheduler" in the Intelligence Server

  1. In Developer, open Strategy Intelligence Server Configuration.
  2. Go to Server Definition > Advanced.
  3. Select the Use Strategy Scheduler checkbox.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart the Intelligence Server.

Workaround

  1. Browse to the folder where the dossier is located and right-click on it.
  2. Choose Share.
The required link appears without the error and can be copy-pasted.
