KB483631: Intelligence Server Crashes Due to Incorrect Pointer Casting When Calculating Metric Qualifications

Community Admin

• Strategy

In MicroStrategy 2019 and earlier versions dating back to MicroStrategy 10.3, the Intelligence Server may crash when certain metric qualifications are applied because incorrect casting in Data Engine logic changes how data is calculated.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Cause

  • Incorrect casting of a pointer in Data Engine code changes the workflow of certain metric qualification calculations and sometimes results in the Intelligence Server crashing.

Solution

  • Upgrade to Strategy 2019 Update 1 or above. We recommend the latest version.

In the new fix, a typo in Data Engine code is corrected so that incorrect casting is not done. This prevents the Intelligence Server from executing subsequent actions that may crash the Intelligence Server.

Steps to Reproduce

The example above does NOT cause the Intelligence Server to crash; it serves to show the structure of a calculation that is affected by the fix. We use Strategy Tutorial objects:

  • Open Strategy Web.
  • Create a new dossier.
    • Add Data > New Data > Databases > Select "CITY_MNTH_SLS".
    • Add Data > Existing Objects > Select the following attributes and metrics:

    • Link the Month Id attribute to the Month attribute.
    • Drag Year Id, Cust City Id, and Tot Cost to a Grid visualization.
    • Add the following metric qualifications on the visualization:
