KB484754: Launching System Manager or Command Manager under a Linux operating system produces the error, "WARNING: An illegal reflective access operation has occurred."

Xiaoqin (Kim) Jin

Product Owner, Principal • MicroStrategy

This article describes an issue where launching System Manager or Command Manager under a Linux operating system produces errors in the console.

Description

When launching some Strategy tools under a Linux operating system, such as System Manager or Command Manager, the following error message may appear in the console:

WARNING: An illegal reflective access operation has occurred

Several other warnings appear as well. Refer to the example below for more details about the warning messages.

Why is this happening?

Since JDK 9, accessing private members of classes via reflection is forbidden until proper privileges are defined in the module description file. For compatibility purposes, JVM only exposes warnings about the illegal accesses, instead of banning them.
Since Strategy tools or dependent third party libraries might contain code to access private members of classes via reflection, this leads to JVM displaying the warnings.
Since the warning messages have no impact on the functionalities of the tools, no additional actions are necessary.
