KB486727: Prompt answers in reports are different each time or not all answers are available to select

Ramses Castro Cabrera

Senior Cloud Support Engineer II • MicroStrategy

A prompt is a question the system presents to a user during report execution. How the user answers the question determines what data is displayed on the report when it is returned from your data source. The report designer can create one prompt that asks users to select which corporations they want to see data for, and another prompt that asks users what year they want to see data for.

Symptom:

When choosing among the different options of prompt answers while executing a report, the user could notice that not all the expected available answers are free to choose (for example all the months for different years). Also, it may happen that the prompt options are different for one user than for another user.
Cause:

When a user runs a prompted report containing an attribute element prompt or a hierarchy prompt, an element request is created. An element request is a SQL statement that is submitted to the data warehouse. Once the element request is completed, the prompt can be resolved and sent back to the user. Element caching, set by default, allows for this element to be stored in memory so it can be retrieved rapidly for subsequent element requests without triggering new SQL statements against the data warehouse.
When there is a hit in the limit of this reserved memory for caches, it is possible that the list of prompt answers could be affected, resulting in an incomplete list of elements.
Action:

In the Project Configuration Editor, in the Caching: Auxiliary Caches (Elements) category, under Server, set a higher value for the Maximum RAM usage (KBytes). Increasing this limit will allow the user to have more memory available for elements displayed for a prompt.
If the limit is still being hit, consider also purging the element caches to reduce the saturation of memory for it in use. Please find here more information about this feature.
