KB486746: What is the MicroStrategy Behavior File?

Andrew Geyster

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

The MicroStrategy Behavior File is a per installation control file created by the MicroStrategy Installer that manages the functionality of different MicroStrategy applications.

The Strategy Behavior File, or mstr.bhv, is a control file that manages the functionality of all the Strategy applications. It is created by the Strategy installer with the information needed to allow, modify, or prevent the execution of the individual applications being installed. It will subsequently be encrypted, such that it cannot be read or modified after the installation has completed.

Location:

The Strategy Behavior File is generated during installation on every deployment. This file is located in the <mstr-home> directory.

  • On Linux the path is:
    /var/opt/MicroStrategy/mstr.bhv
  • On Windows the path is:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\mstr.bhv

Purpose:

When any Strategy application is launched it will read the Strategy Behavior file to determine how it should operate within the context of the license key used for deployment. This makes the file integral to the usage of the software. If the file is missing or corrupted, then Strategy applications will have their ability to function impacted and will stop launching.

Updating:

Because the contents are encrypted, it cannot be updated manually. The only way to replace it is through the Strategy Installer. If a change is made to the installation of Strategy, such as replacing the license key, changing the activation state, or installing/uninstalling products, the Behavior file will be updated. All applications would have to be restarted for the changes to take effect, as the applications only read the file during launch.
If this file is lost or damaged, to the point where the Strategy products no longer function, and a new Behavior file needs to be recreated, the installation of Strategy will have to be repaired, or installed from scratch.
