KB487077: Connection to python using "get_connection"in Workstation script fails with mstrio in MicroStrategy Cloud Environment.

Python can't be executed against private webapps if not accessible over public Application Load Balancer and throws error while running from the script section of the Workstation.

Symptom

Python can't be executed against private webapps if not accessible over public Application Load Balancer and throws error while running from the script section of the Workstation.

Cause

  • Python Service Limitation:

    • The Python service requires access to endpoints over a public ALB. This is a technical design limitation that cannot be bypassed or altered.
    • This is due to Python service architecture, which does not support execution against private, non-publicly accessible endpoints.

Error similar to below screenshot:

Solution

  • Switch to the Public Endpoint:

    • Reconfigure all Python-related workflows and integrations to use the public endpoint if they want to run through Workstation.
  • Enhance Security on the Public Endpoint:

    • Enforce IP restrictions to allow access only from trusted IP addresses.
    • Implement robust authentication mechanisms (e.g., API keys, OAuth tokens).

The Python runtime environment used inside Workstation operates in an infrastructure where it cannot directly access private network resources. Therefore, the endpoint (e.g., your web application or service) must be exposed via a publicly accessible ALB to allow the Python runtime to communicate with it.

Publicly accessible doesn't mean "open to everyone." It means that the endpoint must be accessible over the internet, but it can still be secured using different techniques.
