This technical note explains how to set up a project using partition mapping tables in MicroStrategy Architect 9.4.x - 10.x.

To add and set up a Partition Mapping Table in a Strategy 9.4.x - 10.x project, users have to follow the steps below.
Create the Partition Mapping Table (PMT):
This table must be created with the following structure:

Report: R1
Job: 677
Data Rows: 12
Data Columns: 3

select a11.MONTH_ID MONTH_ID,
    sum(a11.TOT_DOLLAR_SALES) ANORMALSUM,
    sum(a11.TOT_DOLLAR_SALES) WJXBFS1,

ATTRIBUTE_IDPBTNAME

The ATTRIBUTE_ID column name must match the column name on the partitioned base tables. This column contains the values of the attributes at which the tables are partitioned.
For example, if the partition level is at Year, this column will be named 'Year_id' and contain values such as: 1998, 1999 and 2000.
The PBTNAME column name cannot be changed. This column contains the names of the partitioned base tables. PBTNAME = Partitioned Base Table Name.
Add the PMT to the project:

  • Open the Warehouse Catalog under the Schema menu. The users' Partition Mapping Table appears in the left window.
  • Highlight the table and select the arrow pointing to the right.

This process adds the users' PMT table to the project, along with the partition base tables.

This table now appears in the right window with a different icon than regular tables and the number of partitioned tables in parenthesis. The partitioned tables that are used can be viewed by right-clicking on the table and selecting View Partition.

  • Save and Close. Update Schema.

Add the partitioning level to the PMT:

  • Go to the Partition Mappings folder under Schema Objects. The PMT appears in the right window.
  • Right-click on the table and select edit.
  • Click on the 'Add' button and select the attribute that marks the level of partitioning.

  • Save and Close. Update Schema.

Verifying that the partitioned tables are being used:
If a report is run now, it will use the partitioned tables when needed.
For this example, the category sales fact table are partitioned at the year level.

NOTE: The PBTNAME in the Partition Mapping Table (PMT) should be unique. Otherwise, double counting may occur.
