KB7615: How to move objects between systems in MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server

Community Admin

• Strategy

Discusses the ability to migrate objects between multiple Narrowcast systems in similar manner to MicroStrategy Object Manager.
Through the Narrowcast Server Administrator Console, administrators can manage multiple systems at the same time. This ability to administer multiple systems is useful for maintaining separate development, test and production environments, and migrating objects between them in similar manner to the way MicroStrategy Object Manager works.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Systems involved in the copy must have different System ID's -- Source and Destination systems do not need to be created through the Copy Repository Tool.  The two systems can be independently created.
  • Systems that are database backups of each other cannot be registered in the same console, and as a result object migration cannot happen between them.
  • Source and Destination systems must be of the same version.

NOTES:

  • All objects inside the Applications folder can be migrated from one system to another.
  • Only the following objects inside the Administration folder can be migrated: device subfolders and devices, locales, information sources, document formatters, and information transmitters.
  • The system object, the Applications folder, the Administration folder, and other administration objects cannot be migrated.
  • Subscriptions and subscription book properties/elements cannot be migrated -- The migration feature of the Narrowcast Administrator console only applies to Object Repository objects.

SETUP:

To set up an environment for performing object migration between two systems:

  1. A machine with MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server Administrator console
  2. Register the source and destination systems within the same console.
  3. Drag and Drop an object to move from the source system to destination system. A conflict resolution window will appear containing a list of the object dependencies:

The following is a list of the Actions that the console proposes to take.  Choosing "Reject" does not perform any action:

 Action

When Displayed

"Accept" Description

Create

Object does not exist in destination

Creates the object in the destination system using the definition of the object in the source system.

Refresh

Object exists in the destination system and has the same definition as the object in the source system.

Does not cause change to the definition of the object in the destination system.

Update

Definition of object in the source has changed, and source has a newer definition

Destination object will be replaced with the object definition of the source system.

Overwrite

Definition of both objects has changed

Destination object will be replaced with the object definition of the source system.

Revert

Definition of object in the source has changed, and source has a older definition

Destination object will be replaced with the object definition of the source system.
