KB7739: What is the MicroStrategy SMTP Service and how is it different from Microsoft SMTP Service?

This knowledge base article outlines the differences between the MicroStrategy SMTP Service and Microsoft SMTP Service.

The Strategy Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Service is required and must be started when sending services through Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.4.x-10.x. This service is started either in the Services applet in the Control Panel or as MCSMTPSV.exe process in the Task Manager.
The Microsoft SMTP Service is unrelated to Strategy Narrowcast Server and has no impact on the Strategy Narrowcast Server system or its functionality. If this service is not needed for the machine to operate, then it is a good idea to either turn it off, set it to start manually upon a reboot of the machine or set it to disable. This will free up system memory and resources that are not needed.
