Community Admin

Users obtain the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) of a service using MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server.  When users apply the extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) to that XML using the TestXML tool, they see the following error message: "XML, Ln 1, Col 9 : Error : A string literal was expected, but no opening quote character was found."

SYMPTOM:
Users obtain the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) of a service using Strategy Narrowcast Server.  When users apply the extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) to that XML using the TestXML tool, they see the following error message:

XML, Ln 1, Col 9 : Error : A string literal was expected, but no opening quote character was found.

CAUSE:
This issue occurs because Strategy TestXML cannot read the XML because it contains some characters that cannot be read when they follow the XML rules.

In the example notice the rfd=3D"0". It must be rfd="0". Also, notice the '=' character at the end of each line.

Obviously, Strategy TestXML is not able to read this incorrect XML.

There are several possible explanations for Strategy Narrowcast Server generating incorrect XML in a service. For example, when users employ an Internet browser or a mail client that is not certified.

ACTION:
To resolve this issue, users must remove the incorrect characters using Microsoft Word as outlined below.

  • Open the XML file using Microsoft Word.
  • Replace =3D with = as shown below:

  • Replace =^p with a empty field as shown below:

  • NOTE: ^p means carriage return.
  • Save the XML file. (The file has to be saved as text file and only after doing so, change back the extension to XML).
  • Open the XML and the XSL using TestXML and the tool will be able to transform the files and generate the Output:
