KB8785: How does the auto-connect feature work in MicroStrategy Web?

In Strategy Web 10.x, administrators can choose to connect Intelligence Servers to their Strategy Web instance using the Manual connect mode or the Automatic connect mode.
 
The Automatic connect mode will force Strategy Web to continually poll the Intelligence Server for connectivity. In this way, when the Intelligence Server goes down for any reason, Strategy Web will re-establish connectivity as soon as the Intelligence Server is once again reachable.
 
By default, the background polling process occurs every 5 minutes, but this frequency can be modified.
 

Enabling Automatic mode

To enable the Automatic connect mode, follow these steps:

• Navigate to the Strategy Web Administrator page.
• For any Strategy Intelligence Server, click on Modify
• In the Server Properties window, under Connect Mode, check the Automatically connect to Intelligence Server when Web Servers or Intelligence Server is restarted option, like shown below:
   
  

• Save your changes.

Note: Once the mode is set to Automatic, a manual disconnect of the Intelligence Server from the Web Administrator page will automatically switch the connection mode back to Manual, since this is considered a manual override.
 

Modifying the polling frequency

To modify the auto-connect frequency:

1. Edit the Strategy.xml file. On a 64-bit windows machine, this file is located here by default: C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Web ASPx\WEB-INF
2. Locate all instances of the intelligenceServerPollingFrequency parameter and update the value to the new frequency. This parameter may appear differently in different versions of Strategy Web. For Strategy Web 9.4.1, this parameter appears in the following form:

3. Restart the application server for the changes to take effect.
