KB9010: How does the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server restarter determine when to restart?

The MicroStrategy Intelligence Server restarter is a feature incorporated into the MicroStrategy Listener service.

The Strategy Intelligence Server restarter is a feature incorporated into the Strategy Listener service. While the Strategy Listener service is running, the service will monitor Strategy Intelligence Server. If the Strategy Listener detects that Strategy Intelligence Server has been shut down abnormally, then Strategy Listener will restart Strategy Intelligence Server automatically. This restarter feature is designed to minimize Strategy Intelligence Server downtime.

Strategy Intelligence Server interaction with Windows Event Log
When the Strategy Intelligence Server service is started, Strategy Intelligence Server will create an entry in the Windows NT Application Event Log. This entry will have a Source of 'MSTRServer' and a Category of 12.

When Strategy Intelligence Server is shut down manually, Strategy Intelligence Server will create an Event Log entry of Category 13, again with a Source of 'MSTRServer'.

Strategy Intelligence Server Restarter logic
The Strategy Listener will monitor the Windows NT Application Event Log for new log entries and uses the log entry of Category 12 from the 'MSTRServer' Source as an indication that Strategy Intelligence Server has been started. The Strategy Listener will also check to see that Strategy Intelligence Server is running as a service.

After determining that the Strategy Intelligence Server service has been started, Strategy Listener will periodically poll the operating system to see if the MSTRSVR.exe process is executing. If the MSTRSVR.exe process is found to not be executing at any time, Strategy Listener will check the Event Log to see if an Event Log entry of Category 13 has been created by 'MSTRServer'. If such an entry is found, then Strategy Listener will assume that Strategy Intelligence Server has been shut down normally and will not attempt to restart the Strategy Intelligence Server service.
On the other hand, if a new Event Log entry of Category 13 is not found, then Strategy Listener will assume that Strategy Intelligence Server has been shut down abnormally and will attempt to restart the Strategy Intelligence Server service.

The parameters that control the behavior of the Strategy Intelligence Server restarter are stored in the registry at the following location:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\MAPING\Strategy Intelligence Server]

For a detailed description of the registry settings used by the restarter, refer to Strategy Knowledge Base document:
