KB9364: How to create a MicroStrategy 9.4.x - 10.x Report Services document that displays a table containing data from multiple datasets

This technical note explains how to create a Report Services document that displays data from multiple datasets.

In many cases, users may want their Report Services document to display a grid that combines data from multiple datasets.
The following procedure will serve as an example to describe how to achieve this functionality and will use the grid shown below as the model:

In this example, it is necessary to format the grid to display quarterly and monthly data in adjacent columns. Perform the following steps to create such a grid:

  • Make the necessary attributes and metrics available to the Report Services document through one or more datasets. For this, the two datasets illustrated below can be used or a single dataset containing Quarter, Month, Region, Profit and Revenue can be created:
    Dataset A

  •
    Dataset B

  • In the Details Header (or Footer) section, create a grid within the Report Services document that contains all of the objects of Dataset A. Make sure to place the 'Quarter' attribute in the column. For identification purposes, this example will refer to this object as 'Grid A'.
  • Set the auto style of 'Grid A' to be “Small Type” in order to remove most of the formatting (i.e. background colors, borders, etc.).
  • Change the Grid Options so the Metrics column has a width of 0 (use the “Grid Options” option under the Grid menu). This will remove the Metric column and the Quarter header.
  • Use the Grid Options to change the width of the remaining columns and apply any additional formatting needed.
  • Create a second grid to the right of 'Grid A' within the same section of the Report Services document. The new grid must contain all of the objects of Dataset B. Again, make sure to place the 'Month' attribute in the column. The second grid will be called 'Grid B'.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 for 'Grid B'.

The final grid will be created by joining Grids A and B. The 'Region' attribute must be added to 'Grid B' in order to achieve the desired aggregation but the row headers should now be displayed in Portable Document Format (PDF). To achieve this:

  1. Highlight 'Grid B' and use the Grid Options to not display row headers.
  2. Place the grids next to each other so their rows are aligned and both Quarterly and Monthly data are displayed in PDF as if they were part of the same object. It may be necessary to modify the height and width of these grids so they don’t overlap each other when viewed in PDF.
