KB9575: “Data source cannot be initialized” error message appears in MicroStrategy Developer on a Windows Server Operating System that is not connected to the network.

This technical note list possible causes for the error “Data source cannot be initialized” in MicroStrategy Developer

SYMPTOM:
The following error message appears in Strategy Developer when a user attempts to connect to a Strategy Project on a Windows Server Operating System:

Data source cannot be initialized.

CAUSE:
There are two possible causes for this issue:

  • Strategy Developer will not start the project properly if the network cable is un-plugged from the machine. To confirm this, determine if the network cable is connected to the machine.
  • The Microsoft Loopback adapter is not installed on the machine.

The Microsoft Loopback adapter is a tool used for testing in a virtual network environment where access to a network is not feasible. Also, the Loopback adapter is essential if there are conflicts with a network adapter or a network adapter driver. Network clients, protocols, etc. can be bound to the Loopback adapter so that the network adapter driver or network adapter can be installed at a later time while retaining the network configuration information.

The Loopback adapter can also be installed during the unattended installation process. For more information on the Loopback adapter, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 236869.

ACTION:
If the issue does not appear to result from a disconnected network cable, ensure that the Microsoft Loopback adapter is installed. This can be accomplished by performing the following steps:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware.
  2. Click 'Add/Troubleshoot a device' and then click 'Next'.
  3. Click 'Add a new device' and then click 'Next'.
  4. Select the radio button for 'No, I want to select the hardware from a list' and then click 'Next'.
  5. Select 'Network adapters' and then click 'Next'.
  6. In the Manufacturers box, select Microsoft.
  7. In the Network Adapter box, click Microsoft Loopback Adapter and then click 'Next'.
  8. Click 'Finish'.
