KB9968: Why can't MicroStrategy display an empty grid instead of the "Report returned no data" message for a report including mutually excluding clauses?

Why can't MicroStrategy display an empty grid instead of the "Report returned no data" message for a report including mutually excluding clauses?

Users sometimes encounter the "Report returned no data" message when executing a report and are unable to display the report result as an empty grid instead. However, the "Report returned no data" message does not necessarily indicate that a null value has been encountered.
Consider the following Strategy Tutorial project report as an example:

  • “2002 & 2003 Year” consolidation
  • “Revenue” metric
  • Year in list(2000) filter

The SQL generated contains the following mutually excluding clauses:
...
from a11
where (a11. in (2003)
and a11. in (2001, 2000))
No attribute element from the Time hierarchy (YEAR) is passed from the metadata to qualify the metric. Therefore, no null value (or any value) can be returned from the warehouse in this example.
Since no null value is returned, it is impossible for the Strategy Analytical Engine to transform the null into a zero or any other value specified to replace nulls. Thus, the Strategy Analytical Engine cannot populate any grids.
