KB484125: Known limitation for changing metadata database connection passwords when the Intelligence Server is running

Pengjiang Huang

Software Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

This article addresses the known limitation when changing the metadata database connection passwords with the Intelligence Server running. This article also provides a workaround to avoid the error of jobs failing.

Description

Currently, Strategy does not support changing the metadata (MD) database connection passwords when the Intelligence Server is running. If you change the MD database connection passwords without restarting the Intelligence Server, almost all jobs related to the metadata server will fail.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Chang the MD database connection passwords with the Intelligence Server running.
  2. Configure the Intelligence Server via the Strategy Configuration Wizard without restarting the Intelligence Server.

You receive the following error:
Error obtaining a server session: (Invalid operation in authentication due to one of the following: connection to the database server is lost; no available memory; the configuration is in an inconsistent state.)

Why is this happening?

This is happening because the MD database connection passwords is cached in-memory. The cached passwords will not update if you change the database connection passwords while the Intelligence Server is running.

Workaround

You should restart the Intelligence Server.
