KB484816: Limitations of Hierarchy Reporting against Kyvos in MicroStrategy 2021

Shushu Xu

Quality Engineer, Principal • MicroStrategy

MicroStrategy supports Kyvos (2020.2.4) as an MDX data source for hierarchy reporting in MicroStrategy 2021. This article provides a summary of limitations of Hierarchy Reporting features when using Kyvos as a data source.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Hierarchical Display

There is more indentation for each level of the hierarchy tree on a grid, filter panel, and other editors supporting hierarchy display when used against the a Kyvos data source.
The amount of indentation before elements is used to indicate level information in hierarchy display. By default, the expand icon is aligned to the left for grids and different editors in the hierarchy display.

Threshold Editor:

For Kyvos, there is more indentation to the left for root elements compared to other data sources.

Query Pattern

General filter optimization

General filter optimization is not supported against Kyvos. Strategy processes filter optimization based on different selections. Different workflows includes branch optimization (filter selection only contains branch selections), level optimization (filter only contains level selection, including single and multiple level), and general filter optimization (mix of branch, level, and element selections). By filter optimization, Strategy only queries and fetches data that is needed to display visualizations from the OLAP engine thus performance is significant improved.
Due to source side limitation in Kyvos, we only support branches and levels filter optimization against a Kyvos data source. When you make mixed filter selections including branches, levels, and selection on elements, it is likely that performance will drop significantly compared with filter optimization scenarios.

With project-level setting enabled to MDX MultiPass, hierarchical reporting dossiers against MSAS data source will be executed with the MDX MultiPass workflow. For Strategy 2021, we do not support this workflow for dossiers against a Kyvos data source.

Passthrough function

Strategy supports customizing passthrough options when editing user-defined derived elements and metrics. Solve Order, Scope Isolation, and Format String settings are supported for the MSAS data source as shown below.

When using Kyvos as a data source in Strategy 2021, only Solve Order is supported.
