KB439364: Listing properties for available database instances fails with syntax error due to invalid DBConnection object in Command Manager 10.x

Piotr Janaszek

Software Engineer • MicroStrategy

Command Manager script listing all database instances and their properties, including associated database connection objects, fails to execute.

[SUMMARY]
Command Manager script listing all database instances and their properties, including associated database connection objects, fails to execute. The error message reads as follows:

Syntax Error. Please provide valid DBConnection.

ka02R000000kb3oQAA_0EM44000000QD8W.png

[CAUSE]
Strategy ships some out-of-the-box database instances designed for data import from external data sources in Strategy Web:

Data Import Database Instance
Data Import External Facebook
Data Import External Google Analytics
Data Import External Google Big Query
Data Import External Google Big Query FFSQL Model
Data Import External Source DropBox
Data Import External Source Google Drive
Data Import External Source SalesForce
Data Import External Twitter

The error message occurs because these database instance objects have no database connection object specified in their definitions. This behavior cannot occur with standard database instances created by users because they must point to specific database connection objects.

Out-of-the-box database instances used for data import are not visible in Developer.

[SOLUTION]
When designing the code, one should bear in mind that some out-of-the-box database instances returned by command "List All DBInstances" have no associated database connection objects and modify the code either by adding “if(sDBInstance_DB_INSTANCE.equals("[DATABASE INSTANCE NAME")){printOut("OOTB: ");” statement or “if(sDBInstance_DB_INSTANCE.contains(“Data Import”)){printOut("OOTB: ");” statement to omit those database instances by printing their names out on the screen.
