KB484589: Making changes to “Allow URLs to Export” in Web Administrator introduced in MicroStrategy 2020 Update 1 is reverts to default

Vincent Auyeung

Principal Support Engineer • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the default setting is retained when making changes to "Allow URLs to Export" in the Web Administrator page. This article also provides a solution to avoid this behavior.

Description

Strategy allows you to export content from various locations. Certain locations are specified by a URL. For example, an attribute form may contain a URL that specifies the location of an image. The image is fetched during the exporting process and placed in the PDF output at the appropriate location.
As of Strategy 2020 Update 1, administrators can specify which URLs or URL paths are permitted when fetching content to be included in an export. This concept, where only certain URLs are permitted, is largely referred to as whitelisting.
Further information about this feature can be found in this documentation. After adding URLs in the Web administrator page described, the administrators may find that the setting is not retained.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Connect to Strategy Web using the administrator user.
  2. Connect to a project.
  3. Select Preferences > Project Defaults > Security.
  4. Add a new "Allow URLs for Export" (anything such as Yahoo.com will work). Confirm the URL is added.
  5. Connect to the same environment using a Strategy 2020 Developer machine.
  6. Right-click the project source > Configure Strategy Intelligence Server. Select Governing Rules.
  7. Modify Maximum Number of User Sessions to 3200.
NOTE: Any modification should update the Server Definition object.
  8. Log back into Web using the administrator user.
  9. Select Preferences > Project Defaults > Security. Notice the added URL is now removed from the list.

Why is this happening?

Changes made to the project configuration or Intelligence Server configuration using an older version of Developer will overwrite the existing definition of the setting in the Web Administrator page. The older version of Developer will use the default setting because the setting was introduced with Strategy 2020 Update 1.

Solution

Upgrade Developer to match the same version as the Intelligence Server.
