KB484048: Manually configure the MicroStrategy Repository, Platform Analytics, and the Collaboration Server database user, schema, and warehouse

Seong Lim

Software Engineer, Senior • MicroStrategy

This article explains how to manually create database users for the Repository, Platform Analytics, and the Collaboration Server in 2020.

To manually configure the Strategy Repository, Platform Analytics, and the Collaboration Server database user, schema, and warehouse, use the steps below:
Prerequisite: Ensure the mstr user, or any other non-root user used to register services, is a valid system user and able to log in. For steps, see KB483867: System User Settings for Registering Services Before Installing Strategy 2020.
Execute

<MSTR_HOME_PATH>/bin/mstrfixprot
if the Strategy installation files are owned by a root user and not by the user that is supposed to register services.
Before you begin, download and copy the four files attached to this article into your environment.

  • As the non-root user that registered the services or performed the installation, execute the following command:

    <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/mstr_initdb

    The following appears:

  • In
    <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/pgdata/postgresql.conf
    , remove the comments and update the values of the following entries:

  • Start the Repository service by running the following command:

    <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/mstr_pg_ctl start

  • Create an mstr PostgreSQL user.
    • If you are registering the service as the mstr user, open
      Default_Accounts.txt
      and update
      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/create_mstr.sql
       by replacing
      <MSTR_PWD>
      with the mstr PostgreSQL user password.

      ALTER USER mstr WITH PASSWORD <MSTR_PWD>

    • If you are registering the service as another non-root user, update
      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/create_mstr.sql
       by replacing
      <MSTR_PWD>
      with the mstr PostgreSQL user password.

      CREATE USER mstr WITH ENCRYPTED PASSWORD '<MSTR_PWD>' SUPERUSER;

  • Execute the following command to finish creating the new mstr PostgreSQL user.

    <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/mstr_psql -d postgres -f create_mstr.sql -h 127.0.0.1 -S

  • Update
    REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH/pgdata/pg_hba.conf
    .

  • Restart the Repository service by running the following command:

    <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/mstr_pg_ctl restart

  • Create a PostgreSQL user for Platform Analytics and the warehouse.
    • Open
      Default_Accounts.txt
      and replace
      <mstr_pa_pwd>
      with the mstr_pa user password.
    • Execute
      create_mstr_pa.sql
      .

      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/mstr_psql -d postgres -f create_mstr_pa.sql -h 127.0.0.1 -S -U mstr

    • Run the Platform Analytics Installer to create tables in the Platform Analytics warehouse.

      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/platform-analytics-custom-install.sh -o install

    • Verify that the PostgreSQL user for Platform Analytics and its warehouse are created successfully using the following command:

      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/bin/mstr_psql -d platform_analytics_wh -U mstr_pa -h 127.0.0.1

  • Create a PostgreSQL user for the Collaboration Server.
    • Open
      Default_Accounts.txt
      and replace
      <mstr_collab_pwd>
      with the mstr_collab user password.
    • Execute
      create_mstr_collab.sql
      .

      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/mstr_psql -d postgres -f create_mstr_collab.sql -h 127.0.0.1 -S -U mstr

    • Execute
      INI_updated_2.sql.scpt
      .

      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/mstr_psql -d mstr_collab -f INI_updated_2_sql.scpt -h 127.0.0.1 -U mstr_collab

    • Verify that PostgreSQL user for the Collaboration SErver and its schema are successfully created using the following command:

      <REPOSITORY_INSTALL_PATH>/mstr_psql -d mstr_collab -U mstr_collab -h 127.0.0.1		\d
